Traveling Without Actually Going Anywhere: Universal Yums from Ukraine

If you haven’t been reading my blog lately, then let me get you up to speed! My husband gave me a subscription box for Christmas. For six months, I get a box of snacks from a different country! I’ve gotten boxes from Italy and the Netherlands so far. My February box came from Ukraine!

This box was my least favorite of the three boxes I’ve received so far. However, there was a few things in this box that I did enjoy! I liked the crème brulee milk chocolate bar and the fruit juice filled caramel toffees! Yes, you read that correctly — caramel toffees filled with fruit juice! I tried one with strawberry and one with apricot. The strawberry was much better, and I liked the unique combination of flavors.

Some snacks that were in the middle of the pack included sweetened condensed milk cream cakes and a baked milk and dark chocolate wafer. The wafer was good and had caramel, which I love, but I thought there was too much dark chocolate. I prefer milk chocolate.

At the far end of the spectrum and quite awful was roasted garlic rye chips. They were edible, but very crunchy, and they had too much of a garlic flavor. Also, they had a bit of spice to them. Speaking of spice, this box came with wasabi chip strips! Apparently, Ukrainians love spicy treats! My husband liked these but that’s to be expected since he eats wasabi with sushi. I, on the other hand, hated these! They were way too spicy! They were super thin, but were packed thick with flavor! I never eat wasabi with my sushi, so it was no surprise to me that I didn’t like them.

Like the other boxes, this one came with a pamphlet filled with fun trivia facts about the country. Did you know that there’s a castle in Ukraine that is built on top of an ancient inactive volcano? It is now a museum that holds ancient artifacts. Also, one of the world’s oldest maps was found in Ukraine, and it was written on a mammoth tusk in 10,000 B.C.! Moreover, the world’s largest crossword puzzle was built in Lviv, Ukraine on the side of an apartment building!

I’m curious what March’s box will be, but I think I know because Universal Yums puts out a hint on their social media. I believe the next box will be from Germany! Stay tuned to see if I’m right!
