Traveling Without Actually Going Anywhere: Universal Yums from Italy
Due to the global pandemic of 2020, I choose not to travel anywhere. I want to be safe and keep others safe. It is really hard to not travel anywhere since I love to travel! I even have a t-shirt that reads, “To Travel is to Live,” and it pains me to not go anywhere. I am so used to traveling to at least one new place a year. I was able to go on a mini honeymoon to a local destination close to our residence, so that was something!
A few months ago, I saw a Facebook ad for Universal Yums. It looked interesting, so I sent the website to my husband as a Christmas gift idea for me. It’s a subscription box that sends you snacks from a different country each month! You can purchase as many boxes/months that you want. It also comes with a booklet that explains each snack and provides trivia about the country, as well as other cool facts and/or recipes!
My husband purchased me a six-month subscription for a Christmas present! Now I can travel without actually going anywhere! It’s such a neat gift idea for those missing traveling! I also thanked my husband for giving me six more blog posts that I can write!
My first box in December 2020 came filled with treats from Italy! It came with a map of Italy, and on the back, it had space where you could put the names of each taste tester and their thoughts for each of the snacks. It also came with a booklet filled with info on each snack and trivia questions. Did you know that the richest person in Italy owns Nutella?! Giovanni Ferrero owns the company responsible for Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, Kinder bars, and Butterfingers!
Lastly, my box came with a sticker! I am not sure where I will put said sticker, but once I figure it out, I’ll try to remember to let you know! Okay, on to the most important part of the box: the food! It came with eight different treats.
I let my husband try the treats with me while we watched a Purdue University basketball game on TV. Our least favorite treat was the Lemon and Pepper Tarallini. We both hated this snack and thought the flavor was too strong. My favorite was the Tiramisu Cream Milk Chocolate Balls! My husband doesn’t like tiramisu or coffee flavors, so I got to eat both balls, and they were delicious! My husband loved the Black Truffle Potato Chips; I liked them, but they were not my favorite. I also learned that truffles are a type of fungi, similar to a mushroom! Two unique treats included ketchup flavored potato chips and a spongy Orange Zest Carrot Cake that blended the flavors of oranges and carrots!
I really like how you can use this box to pretend you are traveling to a new country without actually going anywhere! Also, the snacks are legitimately from the country! Each of the snacks said “Made in Italy,” and/or had Italian writing on its labels.
