Traveling Without Actually Going Anywhere: Universal Yums from Indonesia
In the month of July, our Universal Yums subscription box came stuffed with snacks from Indonesia. Did you know that this country is made up of over 18,000 islands?! And only about 6,000 of those islands are inhabited by people! Two thirds of Indonesia is not inhabited by anyone!
While listening to Indonesian pop music, my husband and I dined on Indonesian delicacies found in our box such as fried noodle chips. These chips turned out to be disgusting. They had a weird smell and tasted spicy, so I immediately threw them in the trash after downing some water! Next, we tried a pandan crème cake which was a spongey moist cake with a thin middle layer of crème. It tasted a bit like sweet vanilla, which I liked. My husband, David, thought it had a strange texture but good flavor.
Our next treat was a choco coconut wafer. It tasted like a KitKat covered in coconut sprinkles. It wasn’t my favorite treat from this box. Next, we ate a durian and cheese wafer roll! Yes, durian! Durian is infamously known as a stinky fruit. This treat didn’t smell, but it had a super soft gooey center with a weird fruity taste covered in flaky wafer. I did not taste any cheese flavoring, and the fruit flavor tasted like passionfruit, which I do not like.
We then ate sugar coated coffee cookies. There were a ton of cookies in this small package, and they looked like thin graham crackers with a strong coffee flavor. We really liked them!
Lastly, we tried melon and peach yogurt gummies. They had a strong peach smell. They tasted like a regular gummy with a good flavor! David didn’t like them of course — he doesn’t like any gummy candies!
Indonesia is home to Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, and Jakarta. It’s also home to the world’s largest flower, which weighs up to 24 pounds! And it’s home to the smelliest flower whose odor is compared to the smell of rotting flesh and corpses. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get the chance to travel to Indonesia, so it was nice to at least taste some snacks from this country!
The August Universal Yums box will come from Greece!
