Traveling Without Actually Going Anywhere: Universal Yums from Greece
In August 2023, we tried yummy snacks from the country of Greece. First, we ate oregano potato chips. These were surprisingly good! I am not usually a fan of potato chips, but I really liked these! As one of the stickers said, I was definitely “Greeking out over these”! Our second treat was an almond baklava. It was sticky and hard to cut in half for my husband and I. There were sticky flakes with small nuts in the middle. It was alright. David didn’t even notice the nuts in it!
The third snack consisted of dark chocolate orange oat cookies. It was a weird combination of flavors, but it somehow worked! It did have a strong orange flavor, but overall, I rated it as above average. The fourth candy was a pomegranate jelly candy which was gross; I didn’t even finish it, and David didn’t try it. The fifth snack were mastic rose toffees. They were similar to a taffy. It tasted minty with a pine flavor. In fact, mastic comes from resin produced by mastic trees and has a flavor similar to pine! I did not like these toffees.
Our sixth treat that we ate were basil pesto breadstick bites. It had a decent flavor that was hard to describe, but it was crunchy and delicious. I’m normally not a fan of the pesto flavor, but I did like this! Our seventh and final snack was a cream filled croissant. This soft croissant’s outside tasted like it was slightly overbaked. The cream had an off-taste which I did not like. I was afraid I’d get sick from it since I can sometimes have a sensitive stomach, so I didn’t finish eating it.
This month, I learned that the first vending machine was invented in Greece, and feta cheese originated in Greece. Also, the domes of the buildings on Santorini were all painted blue because the Greek government wanted to uniform the landscape; so they had the domes be painted blue like the blue color found on the Greek flag! This was done between 1967 and 1974. Cool facts!
