Traveling Without Actually Going Anywhere: Universal Yums from Czechia

Czechia, also known as the Czech Republic, was responsible for filling our September’s Universal Yums snack subscription box. Up first, my husband and I ate bacon jalapeno chips, which tasted like normal Lay’s potato chips and were surprisingly not spicy at all! It was such as surprise, because when I read ‘jalapeno’ on the bag and in the pamphlet, I was gearing myself up for spicy chips! They actually tasted like barbecue chips, which I really liked!

Next, we tried raspberry pressed candies. These tasted and looked like a large raspberry Smartie. Smarties are not my favorite candy, so I wasn’t a huge fan of these. My husband thought they would be good had they not have been raspberry flavored. We then sampled apple and cinnamon strudel gummy sticks. It was basically a gummy straw that tasted like a green apple with cinnamon and sugar. I would have preferred a real strudel over these gummies! Our fourth treat was a dark chocolate nut bar. It had peanuts, almonds, and pistachios over a slab of dark chocolate. I did not like this bar because of all the nuts, so I only took one bite of it and let my husband eat the rest, which he gladly did.

Next, we ate chocolate oat and coconut cookies. I could definitely smell the coconut as soon as I opened the package. They were thin round cookies with half of it being oatmeal and the other half being chocolate. My husband thought the cookies were okay, but I did not like them. Our final snack were caraway pretzel bites that I also did not like. They were rye bread tasting pretzel bites made with caraway which are spicy seeds.

This was one of my least favorite boxes from Universal Yums, but at least I got to try Czech treats! I also learned that there is a castle in this country that has a moat filled with four bears! In addition, soft contact lenses were invented in this country by two chemists. The city of Prague is known as The City of 100 Spires, but actually has over 500 spires! Also, Czechia consumes the most beer in the world per capita; that is about 42 gallons per person per year! I would not be able to drink that much beer in a year! Could you?

Next month, our treats will come from Germany!
