Saving the Best for Last!

If you know me well, then you know that one of my goals in life is to visit all fifty states in the United States. I am getting close! As of September 9, 2021, I have visited 38 states! I need to visit 12 more to accomplish my goal! My husband is lucky in that he has already visited all fifty states! I believe he finished sometime during his high school years.

There is talk about possibly making Washington, D.C. a state, and Puerto Rico has also been talking about becoming a state. If more states are added, then I will be farther from my goal. Even though I have already been to Washington, D.C., I have not visited it while it was a state, so it would not count in my eyes if it does eventually become a state.

I recently learned that if you leave North Dakota for your last state visited, they will give you a t-shirt! And you will be inducted into the “Best for Last Club”! They have no way to verify this, but I am pretty sure it would be hard to lie to the nice people of North Dakota just to get a t-shirt!

Apparently, the employees of the visitor center in Fargo-Moorhead noticed that quite a few visitors were coming in and saying that this was the last state they had to visit in order to meet their goal of visiting all fifty states. Instead of lamenting on the fact that people did not want to visit their state until the very end, they turned a negative into a positive by making a club!

Now, not only do I have the goal of visiting all fifty states, but I also have an added goal of visiting North Dakota last! Yes, the t-shirt is a nice incentive! Plus, it is just a fun way to end my goal! If states are added to the union after I visit North Dakota, then I will still proudly proclaim my membership in the “Best for Last Club”!

The club has been in existence since 2013, and they currently have over 3,500 members. Their youngest member was only 9 years old at the time they joined, and their oldest member inducted was 99 years old.

There is a movie called Fargo; even though it takes place in Fargo, North Dakota, it was not actually filmed there! It looks to be a black comedy film. Perhaps, I will watch it before or during my visit to the city?

I have already looked up things to do in Fargo, North Dakota, and I cannot wait until I can visit! Interestingly, the Fargo-Moorhead visitor center is for two cities in two different states! Moorhead is in neighboring Minnesota! I had found information on the visitor center’s website about a really cool Scandinavian culture and heritage center, but it is actually in Minnesota, not North Dakota! After narrowing my search to just Fargo, North Dakota, I found a Plains Art Museum, Red River Zoo, and a prop from the movie Fargo. I am sure that whatever I end up doing, it will be a memorable trip!

I really hope I can meet both of my goals! I would hate it if I absolutely had to go to North Dakota for a specific reason before being able to visit all of the other states!
