San Antonio, Texas: Mission Amazing
In late October of 2018, I went to visit my friends in San Antonio. My best friend and I have been friends since 10th or 11th grade of high school. I have since become friends with her oldest and youngest sister, and they are all living near each other in San Antonio. In 2017, I traveled throughout Europe with her sisters, so I know them all quite well! I had originally wanted to visit them in June of 2018, but if you read my “When Plans Crumble: Texas” post, you know that my plans crumbled.
On my first day, my best friend and I went to the Alamo and two other missions: San Jose and Concepcion. We walked part of the River Walk to get to the Alamo, which is a well-landscaped walk along, you guessed it, a river! I guess I did not realize ahead of time that the missions were actually churches. I knew the Alamo was used in a battle for Texas independence, but I did not realize that the fighters turned the church into a battleground. It was neat to see the missions and see where Native Americans lived while the Spanish attempted to convert them to Catholicism. The missions were built like forts where there were rooms for the Native Americans to live, and the church was in the center of the complex. Out of the three missions that we visited, the Mission San Jose was the biggest. Unfortunately, we were not able to go into the church there, as it was closed for a private event.
In the afternoon of my first day, we met up with my best friend’s sisters at Mad Hatters where one of her sisters had a Groupon for two Teas for Two! We got a high tea and an afternoon tea that came with tea, sandwiches, scones, and cake! We sat in the secluded courtyard and enjoyed the tasty treats and drinks while talking in fake British accents! It was so fun to be silly and not worry about being ‘proper’. We even tried to drink our tea with our pinky fingers out! You can see the tea house here: http://www.madhatterstea.com/ I definitely recommend visiting them for an afternoon break! (I was not compensated for this recommendation.)
Stay tuned for another blog post on this trip to San Antonio!
