On the Side of the Road: World’s Largest Things

My boyfriend (now husband!) grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, so every once in awhile, we drive there to see his family. It is a long drive — four hours long! During Labor Day weekend in 2017, we drove to see his family, and as we passed through Illinois, I saw a sign on the side of the road for some attractions, some BIG attractions. It said something about the world’s largest… I forget what item or items it boasted, but it got my attention. I pointed it out to my boyfriend and suggested we stop by on the way back from his parents to check it out.

On our way back, I reminded him of the world’s largest items. So as soon as we saw the sign, we turned off the highway and made our way to Casey, Illinois, home of the world’s largest golf tee! It was at the site of a golf course and had a special viewing area! We talked to one of the workers who told us of more large things in the town. So we made our way to the world’s largest wind chime! You could even pull the string to make it chime! My boyfriend made it chime, but I was not strong enough. This was the town’s first record attempt at having the world’s largest item. The wind chime was downtown, and we walked across the street to see the world’s largest rocking chair!

It was pretty cool to see these large items! It was also interesting that this small town decided to make a big name for itself in an unusual way! There are more of the world’s largest items in Casey, Illinois! I told him that whenever we visit his family, we should try to stop by and see the rest of the items!

Since that first stop in 2017, we have seen the world’s largest wooden shoes, mailbox, and pitchfork. They also have big things, and here’s what we have seen so far: bird cage, wooden token, knitting needles, crochet hook, and pencil.

I do recommend that if you are completing a road trip, you should have some fun along the way and see the cool things along the side of the road. You never know what you might find!
