ON the Air, But Not IN the Air

I wrote this in November 2020… Enjoy!

Due to the pandemic, I have not been in the air on a plane as much as I would have liked. In fact, I have not been on a flight since the pandemic has started disrupting our world. Even though I cannot be IN the air, I have watched a few television shows and have reflected on those shows that are ON the air. If you haven’t figured it out already, I love puns! I really love cheesy jokes and those notorious jokes that people call ‘dad jokes.’

So one of the shows I got into during the pandemic was Below Deck. It is a show on the TV channel, Bravo, and it is about the staff on yachts who live below deck. It follows them on a yachting season as they serve guests who sail on charter. The show looks at the chief stew and their staff, as well as the chef, captain, and the deck crew. It is quite an interesting show to see other people going on vacation and getting to see the sights that they saw on their trip. It is also entertaining to see the drama unfold amongst the staff. There are also variations on the Below Deck show. There is a series following a sailing yacht, there’s one following a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea, and there’s another one which is just the original Below Deck. It is very much a reality show and could be seen by some as ‘trashy’ TV, but hey, we’re in a pandemic, and I’ll watch what I want to watch! Don’t judge me! Haha!

Another show that is related to travelling is 90 Day Fiancé. Now this show is really trashy and such a typical reality show, but I kind of like watching reality shows to let my mind wander and see how other people live even if it could be scripted or super over the top!

There are several versions of this show — seasons that follow people coming to the United States to marry and seasons that follow Americans who move to other countries for love. The original series follow Americans who fall in love with people from other countries. Those people then move to the United States and have a visa where they need to get married within 90 days. The show looks at their love story and their journey during those 90 days by focusing on cultural differences. It is interesting to see the differences in culture, as well as wonder why in the world these couples do not discuss these differences before getting engaged! I am also amazed that these individuals do not even research the country they are visiting or the country where their significant other resides. And do not get me started on the language barriers! I find it hard to understand how some people can be in a romantic relationship with someone that they can only be able to communicate with by using an electronic translator! You can check out this show on the TLC channel.

The last travel related show that I will review for you on this blog post is Down to Earth with Zac Efron on Netflix. This show follows the actor Zac Efron and his friend around the world. I only watched two shows — one where they visit Iceland and one where they visit France. I don’t think I’ll watch anymore, but they were entertaining, and it was nice to see some cool shots of the landscapes and cityscapes of these countries, especially Iceland. I really want to go see Iceland and see all of the geysers, hot springs, and mountains. Zac and his friend present a mixture of a travel show and an environmental show. They show the importance of eliminating greenhouse gases and the importance of trying to stop global warming, while also showing the beauty of the world. Their episode on Iceland focuses on geothermal energy, while their episode on France looks at water.

It is a bit of a laughable show though because they act like stereotypical ‘bros’ just traveling the world and trying to save the world. Their mission to try to save the world is quite noble though, and if I need something to watch in the future, I will definitely consider watching more episodes of this show.

Even though I cannot be IN the air, it has been fun watching these travel related shows that are ON the air!
