Memorial Day Weekend Trip 2024 — Part One

Meandering Mandy

--

I wanted to go somewhere over Memorial Day weekend in 2024, so I asked my husband, David, if he had any ideas. I wanted to go somewhere within a 4 hour drive from our home. He mentioned that the creator of Dungeons and Dragons (DND) had a plaque, and he wanted to see it. We looked it up, and it ended up being in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, which was close to our home! Also, 2024 is the 50th anniversary of the creation!

On Saturday morning, we drove to Lake Geneva where we first stopped at the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum to learn more about the creation of the popular Dungeons and Dragons game. The museum is where TSR had their first headquarters; TSR is the company that made DND manuals, etc. The worker or owner of the museum knew a lot about the history and talked to David for several minutes about it. We also saw some of the original artwork, manuals, and game pieces. I also learned that Gen Con, the famous board game convention, originally started in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, but later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana due to its increasing size. We haven’t been to Gen Con yet, but we plan to go in 2025! We then drove to the house where the game was created by Gary Gygax to see a plaque outside it.

We walked around the Big Foot Beach State Park named after Chief Big Foot, not the Bigfoot creature! There were several cicadas in the grass and buzzing loudly all around us. One even attacked my ankle! Next, we walked briefly around the Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy and went up one of their towers that overlooked their conservancy.

Afterwards, we drove to our hotel, got dinner, and then went to The Dancing Horses show in Delavan, Wisconsin. Performers dance alongside horses and even do acrobatic tricks atop the horses. The horses can do some tricks, ‘dancing,’ and trotting along to music. There was also an aerial performance. The horses were either Arabian or Friesian, and there was one miniature horse. It was entertaining and a unique experience!
